As an author and publisher, I can tell you that would-be authors in general know little about the business of publishing. They have a romanticized view of publishing and often feel that if they throw together a rough draft of their idea, a publisher's duty is to rewrite their gem,  edit it, design the book and cover, market it, and pay them millions in return for this privilege.

I wonder where that idea comes from. The reality is that the author is completely responsible for their own written words. Manuscripts should be rewritten as many times as needed to get them to a professional level BEFORE submitting to a publisher.

NEVER submit an incomplete manuscript to a publisher. This sends up an alarm that you will be unprofessional to work with throughout the  production and marketing processes.

Authors also oftentimes feel that publishers are just living to steal their work. Most publishers are seeking intelligent, insightful, informative, entertaining work and are in this business because they love it. Most publishers are far from rich. There are 5 mega publishers in the world. Many are medium sized, most are small.
