When I started publishing books in 1981 there were approximately 30,000 books being published per year. In 2007, this number rose to over 300,000 books published! (McGuinness' Book Brochure - 13 titles!)
With the invention of computers and the internet, self publishing grew from a grassroots industry to push these figures to heights never before imagined.
The upside is that if you are an author who wants to get published, it is far more easily achieved in today's publishing arena.
Your Publishing choices:
1. Traditional Publishing: Find a traditional publisher to acquire your book and publish at their cost. You assist in editing and marketing.
2. Self Publishing: You handle all jobs from writing to editing to design to production to setting up the printing, distribution, sales and marketing forever.
3. Print on Demand: The book is edited, laid out and proofed. The printing is done to-order instead of investing thousands of dollars in thousands of books and paying to store them while fulfilling orders.
4. E books: No printing involved. Upload the book to an on line distributor. You can always have some printed if you please.
